You will find that the bars at most resorts leave nothing unsaid when it comes to wines and other alcoholic beverages. Many cruising vessels serve a good selection of non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages as well.

If you happen to be on excursion, visiting a local village island, do keep in mind that because family eat-outs are a relatively new fad in the Maldives, you may not find a good restaurant there. If you are lucky, you may find a cafa’ which serves a limited range of local cuisine, especially local hors d’ouuvres (called hedhikaa) and tea. Maldivians can never do without their tea.

But do take some time to visit Male’, the capital island. Male’ has many restaurants ranging from humble eateries and cafas to superb restaurants offering a wide choice of dishes of both local and foreign origin. The only point of difference is that alcoholic beverages are not served on any of the inhabited islands in the Maldives, Male’ being no exception in that respect.

Maldivian restaurants do not insist on formal attire. But it is wise to consider decent and appropriate dress when dining out!

Please do note as well that all eateries, cafas and restaurants have to conform to state-decreed regulations concerning hygiene and food quality are, therefore, reasonably safe.

If you are hot on the subject of eating out when in the Maldives, you should always look closer to your holiday home that further away if you are at a tourist resort. Some of the best restaurants in the country happen to be in the tourist resorts. Most resort restaurants offer a wide range of international cuisine. Most resorts have more than one, often offering special cuisines and flavors from different parts of the world (e.g., Chinese, Thai or Indian dishes). You will find that these restaurants are serious about their sommeliers as well. Most cruising vessels go for set menu options though some of the bigger vessels boats of restaurants that are certainly on par with some good resort restaurants.
